Korea Summer Fruits and Simple Recipes

Summer Fruits in Korea


During summers, Korean enjoy wide variety of seasonal fruits that are fresh and sweet. The reason for that is starting from July many fruits are ready to be harvested in Korea. Many cities in Gyeongnam province such as Changwon, Hanam, Namhae, and Jinju are famous for their exceptional fruit qualities. 

Also consuming fruits during summers is especially important due to fruits containing high water content and vitamins for healthy immune system.

Here are some of the exceptional fruits that are available during summer seasons in Korea. 


Blueberries (July~September)


You may heard blueberries referred to as a "super-food". It is rich in anthocyanins and has one of the highest antioxidant capacities among all fruits. It is great for preventing degradation of eye sights, osteoporosis, and skin-aging. 

Chang-won and  Namhae is known to grow good quality blueberries

Here is a simple recipe to enjoy for snacks. 
On a tortilla place crushed walnut, whole blueberries, and mozzarella cheese. 


Put it in a microwave just to melt the cheese
 Voilà, a simple recipe to enjoy~! 

Peaches (July~August)


  Peaches are also well grown in the areas of Jinju. It increases appetite and boost energy during summer season. For smokers, it neutralizes harmful nicotine in the body. 
Sweet and sour with flowery sweet aroma. What more to explain? 



Ever try fruit as a side dish with rice or noodle? A simple recipe. 

Chop peaches, onions, and Japanese parsley. 

Mix the ingredients together with hot pepper powder, minced garlic, anchovy sauce. 
Add salt and fine sesame powder to taste. 


Fruit with rice? It is actually a great match to
 increase your appetite on a hot summer day. Eat it to believe it~! 

Watermelon (July~August)


It is one of the most loved summer fruit by many people. It is full of vitamin C, a great source of boosting immune system, and most important of all it is sweet and juicy. Also it is one of the lesser fruits to worry about pesticides. Chang-won and Han-am grows the sweetest of all. 

Many Koreans love this dessert. A simple fruit cocktail adding ice, watermelon slices, cider, and sugar to taste. Kids and adult all enjoy this after meals. 

Plums (July~August) 



 It is full of pectin and therefore is good for those suffering from constipation. 
 It has abundance source of vitamin A, C, and E and are beneficial for anti-aging and atopy. (grown in Jinju)




Here, an exceptional creative baker used 
whole peaches cut in halves to make a deep pie. It looks crispy and sweet.  


Oriental melon (June~August)



Surprisingly, oriental melon is 90% water. It is a rich source of proteins and fructose. It also contains calcium, iron, vitamin C, and potassium. Great for quenching thirst and avoiding dehydration. For pregnant mothers it is a good source of folic acid as well. 


Slices of melons, feta cheese, nuts, olive oil, and salt and pepper for seasoning were used for simple salad dish. It makes you feel healthy just by looking at it ^^  


Raspberry (Rubus Coreanus) (June~August)



Raspberry is widely grown in Geochang city.  It is known to be beneficial for blood circulation, preventing urinary infection, and activating men hormones. There are plenty of keratin as well, providing healthy nutrients to hair. For these reasons many Korean men enjoy alcohols and drinks made out of raspberry. 






Raspberry are good for cold dishes. A simple recipe by mixing with any type of salads. 
Also  baked goods, ice-cream, and desserts in general goes well with raspberry.
