[Hadong, Gyeongnam] A tasty road trip to Hadong County

[Hadong County, Gyeongnam] A tasty road trip to Hadong County Digital Chosun's Media Reporting Team  Hadong County in Gyeongnam, or South Gyeongsang, is home to the country's second-largest mountain, Mount Jiri (1,916 meters), and one of the four main rivers that stretches 212 kilometers, Seomjin River. The rich natural environment is what paved way for the southern county to develop exquisite culinary culture, from everything to appetizers to desserts.  The Media Reporting Team from Digital Chosun hit the road to taste the best local dishes.

<One of Hadong's most popular dishes is shellfish soup.>
You can't leave Hadong without a taste of its shellfish soup, made by finger nail-sized corbiculas collected from Seomjin River. According to "Dongui Bogam" (1613) a classic Korean book of oriental medicine, corbicula is effective for recovering fatigue, improving liver and stomach functions and moisturizing one's eyes. And those from Seomjin River are known to be especially tender and nutritious, too, which goes to prove why Hadong is so famous for them.  The hearty flavor of the soup, which locals call "refreshing," is largely due to the chopped leeks added at the very beginning of preparing the dish. With a bowl of rice on the side, no other side dish is necessary because you're bound to crave for more after emptying your first serving. Not only are corbiculas cooked in soup, but they also make a splendid ingredient for Korean-style pancakes, or toppings on rice. They can be eaten raw as well. In some local restaurants, they're mixed with pears and hot chili pepper paste, a dish that's popular among spicy food fanatics.
<Marinated king crabs and spicy king crab stew>
Another special delight of Hadong is king crab, and now's the perfect time of year to try out the various dishes inspired by the tasty sea creature. Whereas normal crabs, or freshwater Chinese mitten crabs, tend to have that peculiar seafood-stink, king crabs of Hadong is known to have a delicate aroma that's a far cry from their cousins. Of the multiple king crab menus in Hadong, marinated crabs and spicy crab stew are two of the most famous. The former dish is so good, that Koreans usually mix rice on the crab shells to make sure they haven't missed out a single ounce of the appetizing food. Spicy king crab stew, as with every other spicy stews, is most sought after by those who crave for hot meals. The combination of king crabs, soybean paste and perilla powder is perfect on its own that a side dish would not supplement, but actually ruin, the presentation.
<Hadong is home to the country's first green tea plantation.>
Koreans enjoy drinking a cup of coffee or tea after their meals, but did you know that in terms of surface area, 23 percent of all Korean tea gardens is located in Hadong?  Hadong is renowned as the Mecca of green tea for its excellent environmental conditions and leaf-roasting technology. Green tea is effective for blood circulation and fatigue recovery, as it is rich in vitamins and amino acids. At the Hadong Tea Culture Center, everything from an old tea plant to farming relics and tools are displayed for the public to learn more about a beverage culture Hadong takes great pride in. At the experience hall, visitors can make their own tea drinks and try free samples, too.
