Along with the beginning
of spring season, the “53rd Jinhae Gunhangjae Festival”
(otherwise known as the “Jinhae Cherry-blossom Festival”) is finally here and
this year will fall on the dates April 1st to April 10th.
This world-class
event held annually in late March and April is one of the most popular
festivals in Korea offering a plethora of activities and events such as art and
culture performances including the commemoration of “Yi Sun Shin” parade and
ceremony to honor his spirit. Set in the town of Jinhae on a mountainous sketch
of Korea’s southern coastline,
the town is best known for its naval port and is home to the world’s largest
number of cherry-blossom trees.
Usually, the Republic of Korea Naval Academy and the Command
of Naval Base are not open to the public. Yet during the period of the
festival, these places will be filled with visitors from around the nation
turning the place into a museum and an exhibition center, displaying the Turtle
Ship and Navy vessels.
In addition to the various activities and performances, one
of the main highlights of the festival is the 800 meter section of flower
lining on the railroad by Gyeongwha Station and the 1.5 kilometers YeojwaChuhn
stream where visitors can take in the beautiful scent of spring.
For convenience and
to experience the real romance of spring festival, it is highly recommended for
visitors to take the “Cherry-blossom Train”(벚꽃열차) which has temporarily been scheduled by the
council to run 8 times a day during the festival period. This special train
will run from Masan Station to Jinhae Station via the famous Gyeongwha Station.
Tickets can be purchased at the Korail Korea website (One way fare 2600 won).
