The Royal Azalea Festival runs from 1 May~ 17 May at Hwangmaesan County Park.
The festival, held annually everyyear since 1997 made its way to be included in CNN's
Travel list of "50 Beuatiful Places to visit in Korea (2012)".
The festival first started by effort from locan and overseas residents to preserve the azalea fields through the hosting of local and cultural events.
Hwangmaesan Mountain peaks at 1108 meters and puts it among Korea's tallest mountains. It is simply famous for having the largest field of royal azaleas in South Korea. The flowers cover the terrain almost completely and the scenery is felt as though a the mountain is covered by pink paint creating a picturesque site. The festival starts with an opening ceremony to wish for prosperity and abundance for the town's inhabitants. Various event and competitions will be run~! Visitors can also enjoy the delicious local foods and specialties.
With spring in full swing, the festival
is the perfect opportunity to take a break from busy city and enjoy the beauty
