The 57th Miryang Arirang Festival is one of the
most representative festivals of Gyeongnam and runs from May 7~ May 10.
It was first held in 1957 but at the time had the name of
'Miryang Cultural Festival'. Since then the festival has prospered with
a variety of more events and competitions.
"Arirang" is a Korean folk song considered by many as as an unofficial national anthem
of the nation. In 2012, the song was inscribed on the Representative list of Intangible
Cultural Heritage of Humanity program by UNESCO. In addition, this was followed by the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea's announcement to promote and preserve the song. In result of this many festivals around the region such such as the Miryang Arirang Festival were organized for the purpose of building an archive and promoting 'Arirang' by holding exhibitions and so on.
“Arirang" has been said to reflect Korean people throughout their moments of happiness and sorrow.” This Korean folk song not only reflects various feelings in our daily lives but it also expresses the time we live in. It is the living history of Korea and an intimate friend of the Korean people.
Top highlights of the festival includes the Traditional Street Parade, the Marathon,
the Arirang Singing Concert starred on KBS and the 'Illumination light event.'
In addition to these there will be performances and hands-on events
of all ages to try out.
