Oedo-Botania, an exotic garden in the ocean

An island is glistening under the sun in shades of emerald green. Colonies of exotic plants and animals form into arcane gardens. Welcome to Geoje, Gyeongnam’s Oedo-Botania.
Botania is a compound word of botanic (plant) and utopia (heaven), meaning heaven of plants. Now, let us begin our journey into this paradise!

In order to reach Oedo-Botania, you must take a 30-minute ride on a cruise ship from Gujora Harbor in Geoje.
This place was originally a stone island and villagers used to cut firewood for their living.

Back in 1969, a couple purchased the island and planted many different plants from various regions. They also built a pig farm and tangerine orchard, which all ended in failure due to climatological hindrances.
The couples then decided to make a garden out of the island, and from then on, personally took care of all the plants in their territory. Twenty years later, that backyard-island became one of Korea’s most frequently visited tourist attractions.

The entire island is shaped into a garden, sprawled along with palm trees from the entrance of the dock.
Many Korean dramas, movies and commercials were filmed here. KBS drama “Winter Sonata” (2002) was shot in front of the Venus Garden.

You must take a cruise from inland Geoje to reach Oedo-Botania, which tickets you can purchase at the spot or make an online reservation beforehand. The ride is available five times a day, round-trip fare.
