"I possibly can't describe what's spread before me," a renowned Korean poet once said after taking a glance of Hansan Island.

Hansan Island of the southern sea is a living history book where the naval Battle of Hansando (1592), one of the world's four greatest naval wars, took place.

In order to arrive in one of Korea's most popular tourist attractions, you must ride a passenger ship from Tongyeong, Gyeongnam, which operates every hour.

During the 30-minute ride, the sea will welcome you with islands of various sizes. Pass the crab-shaped Haegap Island, and you will soon arrive at Hansan Island, where the edged mountains and hills resemble a pair of arms widely open.

Tourists disembark from the ride and disperse to their desired destinations. There are many ways to get around in Hansan Island, like by car, bike or public transportation. But if you have extra time, try traveling on foot.

The closest tourist venue from the dock is Yeomgae Foreshore, where various sea animals like clams and gray mullets live in. Back in the battle days against Japan, this spot used to be an area for burning military salt.

Yeomgae Foreshore is filled with tourists squatted down, digging out clams for a nice hot stew or grill.

After a hard dig in the mud, relax in nearby Bongam Mongdol Beach, a scenic paradise saturated with pebbles of all sizes and colors. Close your eyes and listen to the waves breaking on the shore.

There's no other place like Hansan Island when you want to learn about the rich history of Korea. Historical places in regards to General Yi Sun-sin (1545-1598), Jeseung Dang (shrine) and the Great Battle of Hansan Monument are all great places you'd never want to miss.

The Great Battle of Hansan Monument is not only popularly visited due to its historic significance, but also the birds eye view of the ocean. You can also find the Geobukseon Warship nearby, engineered by late commander Yi Sun-sin.
