Tongyeong is dubbed the oriental Naples due to its epic sceneries of the clear, blue ocean and port. Out of all the hot spots to relish a wide view of the southern city, the Tongyeong Cable Car is especially popular among local and foreign tourists alike.

Did you watch the recently ended SBS drama “My Love from the Star” (2014)? A scene from the year’s hottest drama shows an utterly romantic view of Tongyeong’s Jangsa Island. If you hop on the cable car, you can catch the entire island in a single glance.

Tongyeong is the home of various islands like Jangsa Island, Bijin Island and Hansan Island, all located near Mount Mireuk, where the cable car is stationed. Speaking of Mount Mireuk, the mountain was chosen as one of the 100 most beautiful mountains in Korea.

Tongyeong Cable Car is the longest cable car in Korea at 1,975m. Eight people are allowed on each ride that lasts for about 10 minutes, and when you get off, you’ll find yourself having landed on the summit of Mount Mireuk.

After you arrive at the mountain peak by cable car, walk up for about 20 minutes and you will soon meet the observatory where you can catch a spectacular view of Tongyeong Harbor and adjacent islands scattered across the sea.

After opening in April of 2008, a total number of 2,085,821 people were counted to have ridden the Tongyeong Cable Car. The annual figure for last year reached a whopping 1,371,433, the highest record yet, with an average daily figure fixed at 4,526.

Forty-five cable cars run 6m/s, with each gondola carrying eight passengers. The largest number that can ride simultaneously would be 1,800.
In order to reach the platform for a ride on the cable car, take a taxi or ride a bus from downtown Tongyeong. Taxis usually take 20 minutes with a 10,000 won fare. If you’re willing to take a bus, ride #141 from the Tongyeong Bus Terminal.
