[Tongyeong, Gyeongnam] A travel to Korea's Naples
Forty islands of various shapes and sizes make Tongyeong, dubbed Korea's Naples. There's so much to eat and see while touring in the southern port-city, but today, we will guide you through four.
<You'll find murals at every corner of Dongpirang Village.>
▶ Dongpirang Village offers murals of joy and laughter
Located on a hill behind the Tongyeong Central Market, Dongpirang Village is filled with all sorts of wall paintings that often are broadcast through local television.
From the entrance of the village towards the top, you'll find comic book characters lively drawn onto walls. The angel wings are the most popular mural of all, and tourists normally stand in a long line in front of it to take a selfie.
Other than murals, you'll also find the Slow Mailbox, which delivers letters to the recipients a month later. There's also the Dongpo Pavilion in the village, where tourists usually sip a warm cup of coffee while looking down at Tongyeong Port.
Note that the murals change paintings every two years.
▶ Koera's longest cable car ride, Mount Mireuk cable car
A spectacular place to view Tongyeong and adjacent waters is Mount Mireuk (461 meters). Those who enjoy hiking are welcome to climb up, but for most others worried about slipping over ice can take a ride up on a cable car. The 1,975 meter-long ride takes only 10 minutes to finish.
<A wondrous view of Tongyeong, seen from the summit of Mount Mireuk.>
After getting of of the cable car, walk just 15 minutes up the mountain, and you'll arrive at the summit, where a razzle-dazzle view of downtown Tongyeong, mountains and the sea will greet you.
Cable car rides are off every Monday on the second and fourth weeks of the month. The last ride is 6 p.m., or sometimes an hour earlier depending on the weather and season. For adults, round-trip tickets are 9,000 won, and one-way tickets are 5,500 won.
<The 150-meter waterway linking Somaemul Island and Deungdae Island opens twice a day when the tides ebb.>
▶ Somaemul Island, the miracle of Moses
Every day from the Tongyeong Ferry Terminal, three rides take tourists to Somaemul Island, which was chosen by the government to be one the most charming islands of Korea.
Somaemul Island is a tiny island that connects with Deungdae Island twice a day when the tides ebb. Walking on the gravel road in the middle of the sea, you'll feel like Moses.
<Spend a romantic night on a yacht.>
▶ A romantic night on a yacht guest house
Ever dreamed of drifting in the ocean, perhaps on a luxurious yacht? In Tongyeong, it's all possible at a relatively low cost. Not only can you sleep on a yacht, but also fish and peddle, too. Enjoy a romantic evening with your loved ones over a bottle of champagne.
