[Goseong, Gyeongnam] The home of dinosaurs

[Goseong, Gyeongnam] The home of dinosaurs

Over three decades ago in 1982, around 250 deep, large holes were found along the coast in Goseong County, and not long after, international scholars paid a visit and concluded that they were dinosaur fossils. Since then, Goseong has risen to global fame as being a key domestic destination for featuring traces of the creatures that lived some hundred million years ago.

There are numerous establishments in Goseong celebrating the significance of being one of the three main dinosaur fossil sites in the world, including the Goseong Dinosaur Museum and the Dinosaur Camping Site, among others.

The Sangjokam County Park features epic dinosaur fossils on no other than cliffs, and seeing them alongside the sparkly ocean is a scene you wouldn't want to miss. The cliffs are also one of Korea's eight wonders.

The fossils are known to be traces from the Cretaceous Period, which dates back more than 66 million years. Clusters of footprints hint that a clan of dinosaurs used to live near the cliff.

Learn more about dinosaurs at the Goseong Dinosaur Museum, where exhibitions are on display year-round. Sculptures of dinosaurs are lively depicted.

What captivates visitors to the museum the most are two 24-meter skeletons of a Monolophosaurus and a Klamelisaurus, located at the center of the exhibition hall.

In order to get to the Sangjokam County Park or the Goseong Dinosaur Museum, ride a city bus heading towards Deokmyeong-ri across the Samcheonpo Inter-City Bus Terminal; eight rides are provided each day. Get off at Deokmyeong-ri and walk to the park or the museum.

If you're planning to spend a night in Goseong, we recommend camping at the Sangjokam Camping Site, which is located 40 minutes away on foot from the Dinosaur Museum. All throughout the night, you'll be able to savor the fossil cliffs and put yourself to sleep hearing the ocean waves.

The ocean is located right beside the camping site, so campers can also enjoy a splash during the summer. One of the most popular spots to put up a tent is under a 4-meter-high dinosaur replica.

If you don't have camping equipment, then make reservations at the Namsan Park Auto Camping Site, where six camping cars are provided at the spot. Most come with an air-conditioner, a television and various other kitchenware, not to mention an outdoor barbecue grill.

A walk on the hiking trail is the best part of camping out because the sea is constantly whispering into your ears nearby.
