A typical scene of Mijo Harbor in Namhae is boats gathered together, fishermen pulling nets in rhythm and anchovies dancing in the air.
Mijo Harbor, also known as the Venice of Korea, has beautiful natural landscapes, including an emerald forest sprawled behind the harbor, and a shimmering ocean in the front.

Mijo Harbor is best known for anchovies, and boats anchored at the dock are filled with them. When fishermen swing the nets, anchovies the size of a fist fly into the air.
As the fishermen pull their nets filled with glittery anchovies and the boat starts to lose space, seagulls give the signal to leave by hovering in the air trying to snatch a few bites. The anchovies are sent straight to the fish market, where they are sold through fierce competition.

You can find fresh anchovies at restaurants nearby. Some countries undervalue anchovies as "baby fish," but in Korea, they are treated equally to other big fishes. Anchovies are served raw, fried, roasted and in stews.

The best anchovy dish is eating it raw. The fish is known to die early, so it is usually boiled on the boat, then dried before shipped to other regions. Here, you can exclusively eat it live and fresh!

Anchovies can get a bit stinky, but not when you eat them raw right after they're caught, seasoned with vinegar and other condiments. You will never get tired of the crunchy and spicy taste.

Mijo Harbor hosts a regional festival every summer, where you can (try to) catch fish with your bare hands and eat free anchovies of various tastes.
