A darangyi-paddy is cultivated on a slopped mountainside and has been symbolized as a site of Korean living (Korea was an agricultural society). Now it has become a popular tourist attraction where people go to learn more about Korea’s authentic beauty.

Darangyi-paddies are also located in China and the Philippines, but Korea offers some sort of a visual shock nowhere-before-seen.

CNN has chosen Hamyang’s darangyi-paddy as one of the top 50 places you MUST visit in Korea. So, let’s see what the talk of the town is all about!

Hamyang is located near Mt. Jiri (1,915m), the second highest mountain in Korea. Numerous darangyi-paddies are sprawled here and there, but the ones in Macheon-myeon, Hamyang are known to be the oldest.

Darangyi-paddies are most breathtakingly beautiful when seen from far away. Make sure you climb to Geumdaeam (rock) for a front-row view.

Walk about 500 m up a winding path, and you will see shimmery green darangyi-paddies sparkling ahead of you.

The darangyi-paddies are stunning all throughout the year; summer invites you to a taste of emerald paddies and clear blue sky, while autumn shows you golden paddies and trees of red and orange.

Just when you think it can’t get any better than this, a small stream flowing nearby adds that special cool breeze you will need for refreshment. CNN applauded the scene, reporting that people will be missing a once-in-a-lifetime-opportunity if they don’t make a visit.

After touring through the paddies, walk along the stream to reach the Chilseon Valley, known to be one of Korea’s three main vallies.

The 18 km-long valley starts at the summit of Mt. Jiri and passes the darangyi-paddles, creating a scenic panorama with its seven waterfalls and 33 puddles.

The 5 m-high Chilseon Waterfall at the 835 m spot is extraordinarily gargantuan. You can hear the heavy splashes from yards away, pounding on your heart and giving you an impression you are out on a wild adventure.
