Oysters have long been served in both the Western and Eastern worlds. It is said that during the Roman Era, emperors and war-heros used to relish oysters for their stamina-boost effect.

Legends tell us that Napoleon always ate a dish of oysters before heading out for war, and Casanova ate 50 of them every morning to fuel his lewd personal life. Even Cleopatra is known to have enjoyed oysters for her elastic skin.

Seems like when it comes to oysters, there are no limits in gender and time era!

Tongyeong is Korea's leading oyster production area, and has long whipped up oyster-inspired dishes such as having them boiled, fried and eaten alive.

In Asia, Korea and China are the two most famous oyster production countries, and Tongyeong especially products 80 percent of domestic oysters. The saying "Let's go to Tongyeong to eat oysters" is most frequently used from December to March, the season when oysters are best-delicious.

The best way to appreciate fresh ingredients is to eat them alive, and this especially is applied to oysters! The eye-widening taste of the sea is incomparable to the live oysters you've tried in the city.

The fat and juicy Tongyeong oysters are a bite of salty-sweetness, and when swallowed, a whole gulp of the sea.

Gul-muchim, or oysters and vegetables seasoned with vinegar, is an easy-breezy dish you can make yourself at home. The hot spicy dish is another menu you can't resist.

After a bite of live oyster and seasoned oyster, it is now time for oyster pancake and tangsuyuk, or sweet and sour pork. Oyster tangsuyuk is especially fit for all tastes regardless of age and gender.

The crispy-fried tangsuyuk covered in sweet-sour sauce - a mixture of fruits, vegetables and vinegar - is to die for.

Another crispy-fried dish, oyster pancake, or gul-jeon, counts as the perfect side-dish for liquor. The rich flavors of onions, mushrooms and many more other crunchy vegetables are combined to keep your tummy full during the tipsy night-out.

Nothing can beat fresh oysters with deep fried eggs on the side.

The glorious finale goes to the oyster rice - a bowl filled with rice, oysters, fresh ginseng, chestnuts and 10 different kinds of herbal medicines. You can also add soy sauce or red chili-pepper paste according to your preference.
