Sancheong, a comforting village in the outskirts

Sancheong, once the home of wealthy farmers, has preserved many of its 2-meter-high stonewalls and elegant traditional houses.

With Yulsuwon, a guesthouse built by traditional architecture, having opened early last year, visitors can now find easier ways to savor the cozy atmosphere a while longer than before.

Dangye Village looks like an ordinary village you’ll find in the outskirts of Korea. But once you walk around and look closer, you’ll realize you’ve landed on a land like no other.

The comforting vibe starts from a small two-story police station, which is shaped as a traditional Korean house. An elementary school here has an entrance that looks like it came from centuries ago, during the Joseon Dynasty. Most other buildings are modern, but when you see from above, you’ll notice that the roofs are all designed traditionally.

The Stonewall Walkway at Dangye Village, which was designated as a national cultural asset in 2006, makes you feel like you’re walking through a mysterious maze. Following the path, you’ll see traditional Korean houses, some that are partly open to the public, and some others that are restricted.

In February 2014, a place called Yusuwon was established at the village, in which visitors can experience traditional culture. Already it was recognized by the government as an “outstanding hanok-stay establishment.” Hanok refers to a traditional Korean house. Reservations to look around the area or use facilities are compulsory.

Five main buildings make Yulsuwon, and each has a different purpose of establishment, such as a bedroom or a reception room.
